Upcycling, to us, is the advanced form of recycling. As in recycling you will never obtain a more superior produce then where you started, Upcycling tries to gain a new functional life out of something witch has bees disgarded by people as broken, useless, out of date or style. This can happen very straight forward, like to combine 2 or 3 different materials to obtain a new usefull product, but it can be also used as a conceptual tool or as prototyping one off. (you make one and by the process of siliconemolding and concrete or ceramic casting you produce a series)
With studio MAJ we respond to mass consumption_ and mass production patterns as being 'Hunter/Collectors' of interesting, old and forgotten materials, objects, parts and fragments.
Castaways out of time.
If we look back at things produced in the past are above all, quality, originality, reliability and craftsmanship the key words, for allready a long time untill today, these values are as well as exchanged for mass production at low cost and of dubious quality, it serves the growing uniformity by multinational globalism, a world of creative drought, loss of identity and the rise of short-term thinking: worn after 6 months, throw it on a huge pile and if you don't enjoy your view on Mountain Trash! We'll just look the other way and buy it again... this results in an unfailing gluttony on our ecological system, a system we definately do not own, we are only a little part of it.
Could it be there is another path?
For shure, studio MAJ does not want to slap you in the face with a 'how-to-save-the-world' philosophy, we just want to plant a seed in the minds of people by creating unique interior objects, nifty, clever furniture and lighting with that touch of fairytale poetry.
A new life, new interior objects, where emotion, beauty, tactility, originality and quality center.
